Google earth import - 1000 de La Gauchetière, Montreal

Post by Adamsapple »

Hey all,

So I recently had the idea to import buildings from Google earth into Theotown via photo editing. Was quite a tricky process to get right, but I think this is a cool first proof of concept.
I made the 1000 de La Gauchetière, a mixed commercial building from my hometown of Montreal. Overall the building is noticeably imported looking from up close, however when zooming out I think it looks fine. Here's how it looks in my city:

Anyways it would be neat to see what can be done with direct Google earth imports. In no way should it replace drawing plugins, but I can see it becoming a useful tool to create more accurate buildings.

The building itself:

Not bad, but you should put concrete and details on the ground instead of that brown zone texture. :teach

It looks like a building of a game set in the future ... but it's cool. 8-)

Maybe twiddle with the contrast and other settings, because it looks very strange next to other Theotown building (It's too realistic)

What angle was the building facing? I tried doing this bout a year ago, but I didn't get it right...

Not sure what angle it was exactly, however I aligned the building to match TheoTown's isometric angle. Taking the photo from a distance may help reduce the "fish eye lense" effect on these kind of Google earth flat building sprites.
