Marbat
K2 Shravan
Nagpur.

The festival involves the procession of effigies known as Marbats. There are two types of Marbats: Kali Marbat (black) and Peeli Marbat (yellow). These effigies represent symbolic aspects and are considered to be connected to evil forces. The black and yellow effigies are also called Kaali Marbat and Piwli Marbat respectively. On the second day of the Pola festival, the spirit of Kali and Peeli Marbats comes alive. Amidst feverish slogans, the effigies are led out in a procession. The shouting of slogans like
“Pida, khasi, khokla, rog gheoon ja gaye marbat!” (Take away all our pains and illnesses, oh Marbat)
adds charm to the event. This may also serve as a way for people to vent their pent-up aggression and fury against societal issues.
The Peeli Marbat tradition began in 1885 during an epidemic outbreak in Nagpur. It was intended to address infectious diseases, and locals believed that creating a Marbat would free them from these ills. Yellow Marbat represents the eradication of infectious diseases.
The Kali Marbat started around 1881. According to legend, after Queen Bakabai of the Gond Royal Family revolted against her family and joined the British forces, the Gond family faced difficult times. Kali Marbat is associated with overcoming challenges and adversity. The black and yellow Marbats are taken on a 10-km procession through the lanes of Itwari and East Nagpur. Finally, these effigies are burnt, symbolically eliminating negativity and evil forces.

In summary, the Marbat festival is a unique blend of tradition, history, and symbolism, celebrating the spirit of gratitude and resilience in Nagpur. 🌟

The Renaissance Festival

Celebrated on: 13th of May
Celebrated at: The Central Plaza of Odessa - Odessa, Hertoghoeis Eespark - Osto, Valbyparken - Copenhagen

The Renaissance Festival / Festiva Renassansi (Kursian) / Renæssancefestivalen (Danish) is a festival celebrated in Kursia and Denmark, dedicated to the freedom of the cities of Odessa, Osto, and Copenhagen from Colonial rules of the British and the French, the celebration consists of dancing, lots and LOTS of drinking (like Oktoberfest, sorta), and burning firewood while tossing notes of hatred into it, which derived from the acts the Kursians have did close to the Durban Wall, the Kursians believe doing this will send the ashes of the notes to heaven or hell, and will be sent to the soldiers / generals who colonised the cities to tell them to "screw off!"

Ganesh Chaturthi

#10

Post by Mendel Group »

Ganesh Chaturthi/Gɑɳeʃ Cɑt̪uʀθ̪ī
S4, Bhadrapada (in Adivasi Confed. it means on 4th Sept, in rest places it is according to the Hindu Calendar)
Wherever there are Hindus

Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival that tributes Hindu deity Ganesha. The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha's clay murtis (devotional representations of a deity) privately in homes and publicly on elaborate pandals (temporary stages). Observances include chanting of Vedic hymns and Hindu texts, such as prayers and vrata (fasting). Offerings and prasad from the daily prayers, that are distributed from the pandal to the community, include sweets such as Modak
Ukadiche_Modak,_full_and_split.jpg
as it is believed to be a favourite of Lord Ganesha. The festival ends on the tenth day after start, when the Murti is carried in a public procession with music and group chanting, then immersed in a nearby body of water such as a river or sea, called visarjana on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi. In Mumbai alone, around 150,000 Murtis are immersed annually. Thereafter the clay Murti dissolves, and Ganesha is believed to return to his celestial abode.

The festival celebrates Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence and is observed throughout the Indian subcontinent by Hindus, especially in the states such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Anjarlana, Gondwana, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Goa, as well as Nepal. It is also celebrated in Chandera in Central Asia. Ganesh Chaturthi is also observed by the Hindu diaspora elsewhere such as in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, other parts of the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, the United States, and Europe. In the Gregorian calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi falls between 22 August and 20 September every year. In the Adivasi Confed., it is celebrated on 4th of Bhadrapada or 4th of September.
Although the origin of Ganesh Chaturthi remains unknown, it became increasingly popular after a public celebration was initiated by the prominent Anti-Colonial Freedom Fighter, Lokmanya Tilak aka Bal Gangadhar Tilak, in Maharashtra in the year 1893. It was a means to form a "Hindu nationalist identity" and rebel against British rule. Reading of texts, feasting, athletic and martial arts competitions are held at public venues.

Although it is unknown when (or how) Ganesh Chaturthi was first observed, the festival has been publicly celebrated in Pune since the era of King Shivaji (1630–1680, founder of the Maratha Empire). The Peshwa in the 18th century were devotees of Ganesha and started as a public Ganesh festival in their capital city of Pune during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.[24] After the start of the British Raj, the Ganesh festival lost state patronage and became a private family celebration in Maharashtra until its revival by Indian freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak. Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak,[26] championed it as a means to circumvent the colonial British government ban on Hindu gatherings through its anti-public assembly legislation in 1892. Lokmanya Tilak started the festival in Pune and Girgaon, Mumbai.
On the same day, Chaurchan festival is celebrated in Mithila region of Bihar which is related to Ganesha and the Moon-God Chandra[/font]
