What inspires your city name?

The purpose of this thread is for us to share what is the basis or inspiration for the names you give your cities (roleplay countries' names are also valid).

For example the city I'm working on is called New Winchester. It's heavily based on New York City. The name of course is based on New York, as well as Winchester, the town in England.

I had originally wanted to use "New Lancaster", due to the fact that in the War of Roses, house Lancaster was the rival to house York (possible Game of Thrones reference?) However that name has already been in use by the Lancaster Kingdom.

With "New Lancaster" not possible to use, I decided to use "New Winchester" instead, as "Winchester" rhymes with "Lancaster", and I am interested in firearms (Winchester rifles and shotguns among them).

I just wanted a Malay-sounding city name and out came Telang.

EDIT: I just searched Telang in Google and pictures of a flower came out.

Sotopico, Wekabu and Lemedia were picked by luck, the first time they were used 3-4 years ago.

Bachtung comes from "Achtung" wich means "Warning" or something like that. It was first used in Age of Empires 3 (still better than Anno 2070) 3 years ago.

I originally wanted to use "Luna" but the both died for an unknown reason, so I tried to invent a new name. For some reason I thought about "Black" and "side", so "Blacksides" was born. I have no idea why "Kansas" was thrown in too.

I like to invent new names, but I don't like to use pre-existing names.

Most of the cities I work on is based of cool sounding gibberish inspired from mostly crude Spanish I dub as 'Rullego'
Campaymez means 'Field on the Hill' and Bela Hviern means 'Good Summers' (despite being the coldest and northernmost main city in its country)

I am doing a Northern Germany themed map so...
All city and town names are German (duh)
And the map's name ''Kleines Nördliches Land(von Deutschland)'' means ''Little Northern Land (of Germany)''
I still did not found a proper name for my Hamburg-Berlin inspired city in the middle of the map...

Almost all of my cities are or were real cities, like for example :
- Hanyang and Hanseong were how Seoul was called in the past,
- Wandu and Hwando are the name of one unique city that is now in ruins, but that was not romanized the same way.
- Saikyô was a nickname of Kyoto in the past
- Edokko is a word used to appoint the people that was born and that live in Tokyo.

All of my city names are... pretty much made up, as long as they sound somewhat Slavic... (Except Nurura and Alsevo; I don't clearly know why I picked these names.)
As for the country "Arkhaza", it's a corruption of my username and alias: ArchaeoPX.
Archaeo >> Arch >> Arkh >> Arkhaza

Actually,Harburg is a district of Hamburg and Dermin is a town just out side of Hamburg.

My city names are word plays from spanish (San means Saint):
San Atorio = Sanatorio = Hospital
San Itario = Sanitario = Bathroom
La Vanda = Lavanda = A cleaning product
Mini Atura = Miniatura = Small
These aren't:
Hipow = High Power
Var = Variable

Have you ever heard of places with the same name?
